is coming.
ART IS RULELESS.
We write. We paint. We design. We teach. We create experiences. And we don't believe creativity has to fit into one box.

Welcome to our
Creative
House
BLACK A.I.R. is where art, poetry, design, and ideas come together.
We believe creativity belongs to everybody. Whether you're an artist, someone who loves art, or someone who just wants to try something different, there's room for you here.
Art Is Ruleless. That's not just our name. It's how we create.
Our Mission
To make art something people can experience, enjoy, learn, and participate in.
We're bringing together original creations, poetry, books, classes, workshops, and experiences that give people more ways to express themselves.
What's the point?
You don't have to know how to paint to pick up a brush. You don't have to be a writer to have a story worth telling.
And art doesn't have to look a certain way to mean something.
Come as you are. Create how you want.

Nakiyah LaJoi
Founder & Creative Director | BLACK A.I.R.
A DC native, mother, grandmother, poet, performer, nontraditional mixed-media artist, and entrepreneur, Nakiyah LaJoi sees art in just about everything, even the everyday things people tend to overlook.
For Nakiyah, art is about healing, expression, creativity, beauty, and fun. Sometimes she's telling a story or working through an emotion. Other times, she's creating something simply because she loves how it looks or enjoys the process of making it. She doesn't believe art needs a particular technique, a deeper meaning, or anybody's approval to be considered art.
That belief is what inspired BLACK A.I.R. — Art Is Ruleless. As its Founder and Creative Director, Nakiyah is building a creative house that celebrates Black art and Black excellence in all their forms.
BLACK A.I.R. is about making art part of everyday life. A place where people can come together to paint, write, learn, laugh, experiment, share their work, or simply enjoy what others create. It's about giving people access to art beyond galleries and traditional spaces, without making them feel like they need experience or artistic talent to participate.
At BLACK A.I.R., we're not interested in deciding what art should be. We're making room for everything it can be. Art Is Ruleless.
